Auditory processing difficulties include unrelated conditions. Whilst children may have auditory processing difficulties as a distinct condition, many people with ADHD also have associated auditory processing disorder. This can be very difficult to tease out from ADHD particularly if the child only has attentional difficulties. In our experience it is very hard to diagnose auditory processing difficulties prior to the effective management of ADD and it is usually when a child presents with ongoing listening difficulties despite his or her ADHD/ADD being effectively managed that the condition needs to be further investigated. This investigation should be done at a centre experienced in the assessment not only of hearing problems but also listening difficulties. There is a great deal that can be done to help children with auditory processing difficulties not only with classroom strategies, more visual and kinesthetic teaching, sound programmes but also with the use of FM transmitters (www.phonak.co.uk).
