ADHD Medication In Sports

Lanc UKOtherADHD Medication In Sports

Methylphenidate is a stimulant medication, recommended by the NICE guidelines to be the first line of pharmacological treatment.  However, its use is banned within competitive sports.  Methylphenidate is on the list of Banned Substances for Sport, a list produced by the International Sports and Olympic Sports Governing Bodies.  These guidelines are used among all competitive sports.

However, it may be possible for an individual on methylphenidate to apply for Medical

Dispensation from the Individual Governing Body.  Frustratingly, this exemption has to be applied for before every competition which includes a letter from the consultant, signed on every occasion.  Dispensation is not guaranteed and can be a lengthy process.

Many children with ADHD excel at sport during their school years.  While competing in school events, it is important to find out from the local School Sports Officer at the Local Office if documentation is needed to confirm the child’s diagnosis and medication.  It is unlikely that taking methylphenidate would affect a school competition; however, it is worth finding out in case someone disputes this and consequently withdraws any prizes that a child may have won.

There is a lack of awareness surrounding the use of stimulant medication in sport which could affect individuals taking part.  For further information, please see the UK Sport website www.uksport.gov.uk.
